Know that you cannot control everything in your workplace environment but you can control yourself and your actions.  Finding ways to manage your stress on a day-to-day basis isn’t about making major changes to your lifestyle. Focus on the smaller changes and see what a difference they can make.

We share our tips and techniques for managing stress:

Relaxation Techniques

Just breathe in and out, it happens naturally but when we stop and concentrate on our breathe it becomes the simplest forms of mindfulness. With so many proven benefits, incorporating Yoga and meditation into your lifestyle have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga and meditation assists the body, breath, and mind will help build coping skills by incorporating a small daily routine of exercise, breathing, and meditation.  Yoga is a gentle exercise helping to regulate the breath and relax the body by gently releasing tension from the large muscle groups. This can be practiced at home or at a local yoga studio.

Learn to Say ‘No’

One of the most common causes of stress is having a mile long to-do list, taking on too much and not having enough time to complete it all. Learn how to say ‘no’ to additional or unimportant requests. By learning and practicing phrases you will gain more confidence to respond and let people down gently.

For example:

“Unfortunately I cannot commit to this task as I have other priorities and deadlines to meet at the moment”.  Or communicated directly to your Manager “could you assist me to re-prioritise my tasks list so that I can take that project on’’.

Prioritise and Time Manage

Don’t feel overwhelmed by your ‘to-do’ list as this is a common cause of stress and anxiety. Learn to accept that you cannot achieve everything all at once, and start to prioritise your tasks.

Start by reviewing your task list and list your task items in genuine priority. Set aside tasks that are yours personally and set deadlines towards them, marked, immediately, next day, next week, and next month so forth.

By reviewing your task list and sharing with others in your team, it can be broken down to more manageable tasks over a longer timeframe and become less daunting and overwhelming.

Indulge in regular exercise- What’s your 30 minutes?

Try to incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into your daily schedule. This can be as simple as going for a power walk in your lunch hour, with the benefit of getting up and away from your desk and computer.  Exercise helps your serotonin levels in your brain which helps to contribute to wellbeing and happiness.

Alternatively if you need structure, join your local gym or fitness studio and join in on a group fitness class. With so many options, yoga, pilates, cycling, weights with so much variety, taking a different class will keep you motivated and interested.
